Business Insider: Floridians are trading beaches for Tennessee mountains

We all know more and more people are moving to Tennessee, but where are they coming from and where? A recent article in Business Insider delved into that question and found some pretty illuminating answers:

Tennessee may be small but it’s very appealing

Between July 2021 and July 2022, more than 225,000 people moved into Tennessee, according to census data that tracks state-to-state migration. People are relocating to Tennessee (7 million residents and growing!) from three of the biggest states in the country: Florida (22 million residents), Texas (30 million residents), and California (39 million residents).

What’s so great about Tennessee?

The secret is out, people! The article cites movers describing the state as quieter and friendlier– and they say their money goes farther in Tennessee than the more expensive communities they leave behind. Tennessee has no state sales tax and provides a tax-friendly environment for large companies along with a talented pool of workers.

Former Floridians make up the biggest influx of newcomers

The article says more than 25,000 people moved from the Sunshine State to the Volunteer State between 2021 and 2022. Many of those people hold “infrastructure jobs” like nurses, teachers, and police officers, who can work anywhere. They are looking for a down-to-earth way of life that is becoming difficult in Florida as more wealthy people move there. These folks are looking for homes they can afford and a place where they don’t have to wait for months to get their children into a good daycare.

Texans and Californians migrate east

More than 22,000 people moved from Texas to Tennessee between July 2021 and July 2022, according to the article; most of those were from the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area. They were motivated to leave behind crowds and a high cost of living. So are Californians. They cited one man who sold his 1,200-square-foot condo in Sacramento for $415,000 and spent less — $400,000 on a 2,700-square-foot house with four bedrooms — in the eastern Tennessee town of Jonesborough.
